TNX Workshops
Our workshops are led by master artisans whose expertise spans metal fabrication, traditional calligraphy, lettering, and glass bending. TNX workshops focus on the conservation and repair of historic neon works, carefully stabilizing structures, remaking damaged components, and adapting systems for safe display. By combining time—honoured techniques with contemporary conservation methods, we preserve the material integrity and original character of each sign, ensuring Hong Kong’s luminous neon legacy endures for future generations.
Metal Workshop
In the Metal Workshop, the focus is on conserving and stabilising the original structures that support each neon sign. Skilled artisans and trainees repair, reinforce, and, where necessary, reconstruct metal frames using techniques in cutting, welding, and shaping that respect the signs’ historic designs. By integrating traditional fabrication methods with carefully selected modern materials, the workshop ensures every restored sign remains structurally sound, safe for display, and true to its authentic appearance.
Calligraphy and Lettering Studio
In our Calligraphy and Lettering Studio, master artists carry forward the traditional practices of Chinese calligraphy and neon sign lettering. Working from historic references and original layouts, they redraw characters, strokes, and curves by hand, faithfully preserving the visual language of the old signs while preparing them for restoration. This careful drafting process ensures that each refurbished sign continues to reflect Hong Kong’s distinctive neon aesthetic.
Painting Workshop
In the Painting Workshop, colour and surface detail restore each sign’s original character. Using traditional blackout techniques for tube sections and historically appropriate background colours, conservators apply specialised paints and surface treatments that match original finishes as closely as possible. These methods combine creative finishing with established conservation practices for weatherproofing and restoration, ensuring the signs remain both visually authentic and durable over time.
Glass Bending Studio
In the Glass Bending Studio, artisans practise the traditional craft at the heart of neon conservation: heating and shaping glass tubes by hand to repair and remake damaged sections of historic signs. Led by expert neon benders, the studio follows time‑honoured techniques to match original curves, strokes, and proportions as closely as possible, ensuring replacements blend seamlessly with surviving tubes. Working with great precision and strict safety standards, the team restores ageing signage to working order while preserving its authentic character and glow.
